CanSkate is a learn-to-skate program for beginners of all ages who want to learn the basics of skating. The CanSkate program emphasizes progressive learning in a fun environment. It is taught in a group lesson format by Skate Canada professional coaches and trained Program Assistants. Skaters complete the program ready for figure skating, speed skating or hockey.
The program is organized in six stages of learning. Each stage has six fundamental movements: Go forward, Go backward, Stop, Turn, Spin and Jump. The skills in these fundamental movement categories progress in order from the very simple to the more complex. Once the skills on each stage are mastered, a badge is awarded.

How CanSkate Works - The CanSkate Program is structured in a grid format. Skaters may progress vertically as well as horizontally across the grid. The vertical progression is organized in six stages of learning with an optional seventh stage for skaters wishing to progress into figure skating. Each of these stages has a primary focus.
Stage 1: Balance
Stage 2: Glide
Stage 3: Glide Backward
Stage 4: Edges
Stage 5: Power
Stage 6: Speed
Stage 7: Pre-PreliminarySkaters may also progress horizontally across the grid and complete fundamental movements. Each stage has six fundamental movements: Go forward, Go backward, Stop, Turn, Spin and Jump. The skills in these fundamental movement categories progress in order from the very simple to the more complex. Once the skills on each stage are mastered, a badge is awarded.
