Choosing Apparel

Canskate:

  • Young skaters learning how to skate should be comfortably and warmly dressed.
  • Snowsuits and outdoor winter attire and helmet are well suited to CanSkaters.
  • Helmets should fit snugly and both the strap and helmet should be adjustable.
  • Hockey helmets are recommended over cycling helmets as they are designed to withstand repeated bumps and protect against penetration.
  • Once the skater begins to move around more, less bulky and restrictive wear becomes appropriate.
  • Layering of sweatsuits, sweaters, or fleece jackets with pants and tights or long underwear would work well.
  • Warm gloves or mitts are essential.

Jump Start/ StarSkate Practice Attire:

  • Skaters should dress neatly and comfortably for practice sessions.
  • Layers are appropriate as you will require different levels of clothing depending upon the type of work that you are doing.
  • A dress or skirt and tights, or 4 way stretch skating pants and a close fitting shirt are excellent choices for practice.
  • A close fitting sweater or fleece jacket will likely provide enough extra warmth for most days at the rink.
  • Add a pair of stretch gloves, secure you hair away from your face and you are ready to go.

What Is Appropriate Competition Or Test Day Attire?

  • Girls are required to wear a skating skirt or dress and tights. A dress is highly recommended.
  • If you are taking a freeskate or interpretive test and have a dress that goes with your music, it would be the perfect choice.
  • Competition wear should be modest, dignified and appropriate for athletic competition, not garish or theatrical in design. Accessories and props are not permitted.
  • Boys can wear a pair of skating pants and a close fitting shirt with sleeves.
