Skating Carnival

WOW! What a great Carnival.  Arctic Edge put on another great show on February 20th, 2010.  We heard so many wonderful comments from parents about how much their children had fun and loved to dress up in a costume to skate.  We would like to thank everyone for their food donations to the Food Bank.  We collected a lot of food!

We also would like to congratulate all skaters for their great performances.  Skaters from the CanSkate pre-stage group all the way to the senior level made our interpretation of the Olympics such a fun event.  We were lucky to have Kevin Caron come to Whitehorse from Vancouver to dazzle us with his short program.

Thanks, as well for all the hard work by the organizing committee and coaches. They spent countless hours sorting costumes, designing the program brochure, finding the appropriate music and making sure that skaters had big smiles on their faces.

A special thank you goes to the following people:

Organizing Committee: Sarah Paul, Valerie Neufeld and Natalie Oles

Coaches:  Lori Austin, Charlene Donald, Trish Pettitt, Danielle Armstrong, Michelle Gorczyca and Tanya Sage.
Pictures of the Carnival are available for purchase.  You can view the photos on our website at:

PA for the Months of January and February

Kayla ArmstrongA special thank you goes to Kayla Armstrong for her efforts during the month of January. Kayla has been working very hard and has demonstrated great leadership skills throughout the year.  She is always willing to help and even be in charge during the CanSkate session. On more then one occasion, Kayla has made sure that all the equipment and gear was taken out and put away properly. She assists the coaches by helping the skaters get to and from their groups and helps keep everyone learning.

For the month of February, we would like to honour Vina Nelson and Rachel Pettit for their great efforts during Canskate.  Both Vina and Rachel are always at the rink on time and take pride in helping fellow teammates as well as young skaters.  They always have smiles on their faces and were a great help leading the young groups of skaters during the Carnival.

We would also like to thank all the PA's for a very successful winter session.

CanSkate Information

CanSkate will end on April 1st, 2010.  The final two weeks of skating will include evaluations of skaters by coaches.  Please try to attend these sessions so that we can complete report cards and hand them out during the last week of skating.

April Schedule and Test Day

Starting April 12th, there will be only one sheet of ice available for all user groups.  Reduced hours will be posted and a revised schedule will be distributed to all skaters.  The upcoming test day is scheduled for April 30th to May 2nd.

Summer School Program

Arctic Edge has been successful in obtaining Lotteries funding for a Summer Skate program.  We have sent an email to all StarSkaters requesting information as to their interest in attending the session.  Please hit reply so that we can determine the number of skaters interested and further plan the session including the fee structure.  We are planning a five week program starting June 28th to July 30, 2010.  It will consist of both on and off-ice components.  We would like to hire an off-ice facilitator for 1- 2 hours per day to enhance skaters cardio, strength and flexibility.  We would also offer group lessons and approximately one and a quarter hours of ice time each for Junior, and Intermediate/Senior Skaters.

Upcoming Competitions

Rachel Pettitt will be competing in the Bronze Interpretive  Event at Pacific Skate, the BC/YT Provincial Championships March  11 – 13 in Kamloops.  She earned the right to compete at the by placing first in the Bronze Interpretive Event at WinterSkate in Maple Ridge February 7 – 10.  Congratulations Rachel and good luck in Kamloops.  Rachel also skated in the Juvenile Ladies event for the first time at Winterskate, coming away with a 7th place finish.

Many of our StarSkaters are busy preparing themselves to compete at the Vancouver Island Skate International competition in Victoria April 15 – 18.  Good luck everyone.
