Arctic Edge Skating Club Skaters Finish On Top

Three Arctic Edge Skating Club skaters were awarded gold medals as a result of their performances at the BC SummerSkate Competition in Burnaby, BC. Rachel Pettitt, Kelcy Armstrong and Bryn Hoffman each won gold in their respective events. Pettitt skated in Pre-Juvenile Ladies, Armstrong in Preliminary Ladies 10 & under, and Hoffman in Senior Bronze Ladies. This is quite an accomplishment for Arctic Edge Skating Club skaters as the BC Summerskate Competition is one of the toughest competitions of the year. It typically attracts skaters from across Western Canada, and from the US.

Three other Yukon skaters also competed at this competition. Kevin Caron skated in the Junior Mens category finishing 9th in the short program and 8th in the free program. Teammate Amelia Austin skated in the Junior Womens event finishing 17th in each of the short and free programs. Teneil Caron skated in the Novice Womens event finishing 17th in the short program and 16th in the free program. Millie also skated in the Wild Rose Competition in Edmonton earlier this summer. She finished 11th in the Short and 5th in the FreeSkate for an overall 10th place finish in the Junior Ladies event.

All of these skaters spent time training in Alberta and BC training this summer. Summer is a time when skaters often make significant progress as they are able to concentrate and put their focus into skating without the demands of other activities.

These and other skaters, minus Kevin Caron who is off to Simon Fraser University this year, are back on the ice in Whitehorse as of last week. Be sure to come out and see what they have learned. The regular season for CanSkate, Adult and JumpStart skaters begins September 28.
